I know many of you know that stress can be alleviated by exercise, but did you know it can also counteract your goals if it is out of hand. If you are going to the gym, and seem to have lost your momentum, regardless of good eating habits, and changing up your routine, check your stress !
Is there something bothering you? Something at the back of your mind causing you to lose a bit of sleep, or just keep you in a funk? Then you may be releasing "cortisol", a hormone responsible for retaining fat around the abdominal wall, and the organs that are housed there. It is something the body instinctively does to protect the organs in a time of food scarcity-which was considered a stressful time. You don’t know when you will eat again...the body stores fat.
Just because a person is thin doesn’t mean they aren’t carrying too much body fat-especially around the organs. Not where we want it to be!
Cutting stress is as important as working out and eating right. If you find yourself stressed, or something just hanging heavy on your mind, take a break. Do something you love to do! Take a walk on the beach, paint a picture, or take a drive to a favorite spot. Hit a museum for a change, or see a movie. A positive environment , and a good break from the norm can alleviate stress , and give one a refreshed outlook on life and goals.
If you don’t have a particular activity you do to relax, like a hobby, then go try something new! Start a hobby, or take a class for fun. Be it at the local College, High School, or Art Center in town. Hit the symphony! New information for the brain, and trying new activities activates the brain to create new cells! It fights aging of the brain, and compliments already present cognitive function! Yay, new activities!! Give it a shot! Next time you are scheduling your week, fit in something new! You’ll be glad you did.
