Autumn Antioxidant Health

Well, that didn’t take long, did it? Autumn arrived full blast, and you can bet there will be some caught with their immunities down! Don’t be one of them! Keep your immunities up with healthy foods, and heart warming dishes and good wishes! Awe, that sounds so sweet!
It is really, and so it should be in these colder, cloudier months, we tend to get a bit on the blue side, and that can really drop your resistance to illness and fatigue. What we can do is keep our spirits high, and our menu bright as well! How? Add a bit more of the yellow , orange and red foods for vitamins we need for resistance to illness. Beta carotene, vitamins C, A, carotenoids for cellular health and protection from cellular damage. These antioxidants provide essential health properties we need for optimal health.
And who would have guessed the colors of sunshine would be the colors of the foods we need to stay healthy in the colder season. Here are some great fruits and vegetables to keep us bright in the bluer months!
Squash, pumpkin, carrots, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, turnips, sweet peppers-yellow, orange or red- for a sweet snack that is great in salad, too! Keep that orange juice handy, (buy low acid if you have tummy issues), or try cranberry, blueberry, and for a brilliant antioxidant boos, pomegranate juice! It’s antioxidant value is above and beyond! And it is a nice holiday garnish on a yogurt or ice cream treat if you like. Blend it in a smoothie for a good blast with protein powder. The Acai berry of Brazil is most definitely something to get your hands on if you can! Try the health food store, Genesis brand, or try Amazon Thunder, an online company that will deliver the most amount of the berry in freeze dried form. All the berries you like, and as often as possible.
Hit the local market for seasonal foods, and keep them in use as much as possible. Don’t depend on foods that are not normally in season from main supermarkets, as you can bet there is a lot of Genetically Modified products on those produce shelves. If getting there and keeping up with all that is too much, try an antioxidant blend, like Antioxidant Science with five servings of fruits and vegetables per serving. Sometimes it is great help when you can’t keep up with the produce cost or demand in the house. There is also a coupon code:SAVE35 for saving 35% off the entire order.
There is a great little fall soup recipe that keeps me warm, in case you’d like a change.
Autumn Barley Bowl
1 large pot of water
½ box low sodium vegetable broth
1 ½ cups of barley
2 carrots chopped
1 celery stalk chopped well
2 potatoes peeled and chopped
1 small onion chopped
2 cloves chopped garlic (more if you like- I like!)
1 small chopped turnip (rutabaga)
1/4 cup dried wakame
1/8 tsp. Ground ginger
1/8 tsp cayenne pepper
2 tablespoons Italian or mixed Provincial herbs
1 can organic squash
*1 secret weapon ingredient!
Heat water, add vegetable broth, and the can of squash. Add all other ingredients, and stir.
* Now your secret weapon ingredient is something with a kick, that you like! It can be curry, mustard powder, or my favorite...Pick-a-peppa Jamaican Sauce. Oh, yes! It is quite a great little kicker, and I usually toss in a good 3 tablespoons or so, to taste. Many don’t like the pick-a-peppa, let alone the healthy soup, so that is why it is a"pick your own". Try a good chipotle sauce or use your imagination. Spicey foods act as a thermogenic, making your body burn 25% more calories than you would without the spice up! It’s also great for anti-inflammatory purposes and keeps us warm in the cold months! I hope you enjoy, if you brave the Barley Bowl!

Misleading Food Labels

The Dangers of Misleading Ad Campaigns for Unhealthy "Healthy" Food
The fact of the matter is, most of the junk foods out there that are tooting that they really aren't "that bad" after all....still are! They are trying to mislead the public with their "healthy ingredients", and their slick labeling tricks. So, the next time you think it's alright to get a pack of the typical junk foods because they seem to be redeeming themselves....look again. The difference is usually a better ad campaign, a new marketing twist, and a better way to fool those who don't know better, and may be too busy, or too trusting , to find out the truth for themselves. So for the health of your kids, read the article on what they'd rather you didn't find out.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/usnews/10thingsthefoodindustrydoesntwantyoutoknow
It is really a great way to realize that they have little, or no concern about your health, or the health of you family. They are concerned with making sales goals for that next quarter, or the bonuses that go along with it. I am sure that because of their knowledge of the real ingredients and the adverse effects it really does have on a person's health, they are eating the best quality organic fruits and vegetables, and getting enough exercise and necessary rest when needed. Please take the time to read the ingredients and the nutritional value of these products. Keep in mind that you need to be mindful of what you eat, and what you are putting on the table at your house. People may depend on you for good nutrition for health and wellbeing. Don't let convevience let the junk food companies win.
Look for more articles on nutrition and general health , and let good health and happiness be your way of life! Quality of life is dictated by diet and exercise, and how you feel is a result of both. Enjoy life, and pass it on!!
Be happy and healthy! Always!

Antioxidants for Autumn

Along with multiviatamins and a good diet, antioxidants must be a part of defense against the cold and flu season. Regardless of how well we try to eat in the winter months, sometimes we need a little help keeping the antioxidants working for our health. We have enough trouble getting all the fruits and vegetables we need , and a bit of help is most welcomed, and very good indeed!
Fighting the FREE RADICALS that harm the cells in the body,(Free radicals cause disease and other aging effects on the body and brain),is what antioxidants do, and they are extremely important to our health and wellbeing. It is important to have a diet that has a wide variety of colors of fruits and vegetables for optimal health . When we have trouble accomplishing that, we need a bit of healthy antioxidant help good for the whole family. We can always step up the menu a bit with some pumpkin bread and squash soups, for vitamin A. Add some walnuts, and a few dark chocolate chips for a great tasting added boost to heart health! Don't forget the tea, preferably green, and once in a while a bit of hot chocolate for a warm boost. Just ask for fat free milk , or a low fat soy if that's more your speed. For more information on the positive effects of soy, and Antioxidants, refer to the clinical studies at http://classicnutrition.net .
The site is full of all kinds of free information, and helpful advice!
Antioxidant Clinical Studies are available when you click on the photos to the left of the page, or at the site library. Be healthy and happy!!

Quality Whey Protein

The importance of protein after a workout is extremely important. Most people just grab the most popular whey protein with the best advertising backing it. However, the body does prefer food to a protein shake.
Whole foods are the best way to feed the body, as it easily recognized and absorbed, especially organic fruits and vegetables, with lean meats and fat free dairy.
What do you do if you don’t have "whole food products"
as a protein source right after a workout? What if the easiest and less expensive way is to give yourself a protein shake after each workout? What brand do you use?
Most protein shakes out there are made with lower grade whey protein, and there is no guarantee that the cows it came from aren’t those injected with the hormones and antibiotics, that we humans really do not need! They are also usually sweetened with artificial sweeteners like sucrose, or sucralose, or some other popular chemical that is not accepted by the body. Seriously, this stuff has been proven (in several studies) to be more of a problem than a help!
There is a great whey protein available, with plenty of Branch Chain Amino Acids, natural flavors, sweetened with Stevia, (an all natural sweetener that doesn’t affect blood sugar), and 18 grams of hormone/ chemical free protein per serving. And it is extremely affordable.
You can check out all the ingredients and nutritional information to see for yourself. The website is listed below.
Remember to have your recovery protein immediately following your workout. The longer you wait, even 20 minutes, the more muscle you risk losing! Immediate intake prevents the body from refueling on muscle, so get that protein!

Being Green

It isn’t easy being green, but it sure is healthier! Green living, green veggies, and green tea are all knowingly better for us but why should we take advantage of them?
Green living should be adhered for many reasons that some people still can’t see. The chemicals from everyday products that our skin absorbs that cause cancer, or affects our liver, nervous system and the skin itself. How frightening. Using earth friendly biodegradable products is a necessity in today’s day and age. Also, try more natural soaps and grooming products for a healthier lifestyle.
As for the vegetables, you know you have to eat them. It’s not something your mom said just to mess with you. Green veggies provide a multitude of nutrients like calcium, iron, folic acid, vitamin K , and others depending on what green vegetable you are having! The more greens the better! Our bodies need the enzymes and roughage in fruits and vegetables to help digest our foods. Introduce them into your diet slowly if you don’t have them now. Your body will thank you.
As for green tea, that is an amazing antioxidant, fat burner, and nerve calming agent all rolled into one. And I don’t mean the green tea drinks filled with everything else like sugar, etc. I mean a cup or glass of green tea, without a lot of artificial stuff added in for flavor. Drinking 3 cups a day ( or 3 cold glasses) will raise your metabolism, calm your nerves with the amino acid L-Theanine, and it’s high antioxidant levels will help neutralize the free radicals in your body! What a great drink! It helps with so many things! So the next time you are thinking of how to help yourself with great beneficial nutrients, please consider the green tea. It is a main ingredient in many skin care products, as those antioxidants can help fight skin cancer even when applied with topical products like soap or lotions. It’s amazing stuff! So brew a cup, or add a bit of honey or stevia to a container of warm tea and chill it for a cool drink, and try a natural skin product that may have that as an ingredient, and you are doing your body a favor.
It may not be easy being green in the beginning, but when you make it the norm, you’ll wonder why you ever chose any other way!
Be happy and healthy!

Itchy eyes, throat, and puffy face. Sinus trouble that is just so humiliating as you sniffle your way from one spot to another, and try to convince people you are not crying or horribly contagious. You smile as you blink your blood-shot eyes and say, with that slight giggle that says " Really, pay no attention-it’s just my allergies." Like that helps, truly. Would you feel comfortable on the other end of that handshake from the person that is having trouble controlling that sinus flow, and using every last portion humanly possible of that facial tissue?
Even if they justify that it is allergies; and not some mutated virus they got from a friend at work who happened to touch the door handle at the store, right after that business guy who just got back from overseas. He doesn’t eat that healthy or use supplements, or exercise, and picked up a little viral souvenir from some little restaurant he enjoyed before departing. You ever get that look? Seems long and drawn out, but I know there are you out there that know exactly what I mean. And allergies really don’t defend much against that.
Why? Because your allergies are a sign that your immune system itself is compromised. Why would telling someone you have allergies make them feel any better ? That just really makes it concrete that you are an even greater risk factor in the grand scheme of germ invasion in their lives.
What can you do? Do your best to defend yourself! Sure, you may have tried all the over the counter drugs, and even the prescriptions you got from the doctor, but there is only so much the body can take.
The chemicals that go into the pills to start with are a strain on the liver, and the other organs that are trying to protect the body from overload of all things unnatural.
True, even natural overload is unhealthy, and thus should be taken with consideration. Synthetic drugs are all actually derived from natural sources, to "mimic" what the natural herb is supposed to do. They make billions off them , and give you the side effects free of charge. Until there is something that has happened via chain reaction, and now you have a little something extra that you need even more meds for. And what’s in those pills? Hmm?
The key is to understand what to take and when. It’s truly not that hard. If you give your body what it needs to be healthy to begin with, you don’t need "extra". Extra would imply that you are supplementing an already nutritious diet. Not so fast.
Regardless of how healthy you eat, and even on that "organic" level, (which I highly recommend) the soil is so depleted of vitamins and minerals that we really do need the help from the supplements we take. Consider the fact that most of the country is in a vitamin B deficiency, and a calcium deficiency, and the list does go on. Most store bought vitamins have a slight fraction of what the body really needs. Especially if you do more than sit on a couch all day. If you are active at all, the chances are that synthetic vitamin (that is the subject of great marketing to the public, and available at your local supermarket, that your body really can’t absorb anyway) is not doing you any good.
An active person needs much more than they make available in the mainstream publicized brands. Check out classicnutrition.net , and look in the "library " section for articles on what you really need. It’s free to roam, and you will definitely appreciate the information. I know I do. I am a personal trainer, specializing my studies in performance nutrition, and was truly elated to find this site. I was frustrated with the lack of good supplements out there. And good luck finding something organic, and without the artificial sweeteners. This is the good stuff. The articles are there, the clinical studies are actually put in terms the layman can understand, and the vitamins are a two month supply, instead of one.
Oh, and if allergies are a real problem with you like they are for me, they have a natural aid to assist with that, too. It’s called Homosystine , and it is an extra dose of some B12, and B6 to help the body handle stress better, keeping that immune system going. The adaptogenic herbal blend is a real plus, and a huge improvement. It is a great help even during the cold and flu season, boosting the immune system of those who don’t suffer allergies at all! Make sure you have no allergies to these herbal ingredients, and take advantage of the help it can give. Take only as long as you need. As we know, too much of a good thing can be bad too. Everything in moderation! Eat a colorful diet, get plenty of ample rest, keep hydrated, and enjoy your life!
Be happy and healthy!

Rest Your Brain

Turn off the T.V. , the computer, or the texting before going to bed, and you will sleep better. There are better ways to prepare for sleep are to keep your eyes spared from the bright lights and electrical impulses from your television or computer, be it hand held or not.
When you are trying to wind down, the lights from the electrical devices we just can’t seem to do without, keep the brain alert for some time after we turn them off.
Your best bet is to get a magazine you like, or a good book and just settle into bed for the last stretch of the evening. Reading positive subject matter is a great way to prepare the brain for a restful night. You are more likely to sleep better, and have more pleasant dreams.
The better you rest. The less strain there is on the heart, and you’ll have more energy for the next day, and any workouts you may have ahead of you
It’s all about the images you give your brain, so make them good ones!
Be happy and healthy!

Active Rest

Active rest is very important, even if you have worked out all week. If you have goals to reach, especially in the weight loss category, you need to put a little more step in your week. It will speed up your progress most definitely.
I had a client who started strong, and was doing an hour of cardio after each resistance training workout, as well as 2 or 3 more days a week. Then she would only do cardio the 3 days she did the resistance training. Then she would try to fit in the cardio, period. She wondered why she was getting slower results.
She could’ve kept the results going, even without the intense cardio at the gym, if she had out more effort into her "active rest". She asked why that would help, and I reminded her that when she started out strong, she was burning more calories with all the cardio. Sometimes people get a little burned out on being in the gym everyday. It just gets to them, and becomes a chore, rather than a pleasure.
When that happens people may let their progress slow, or may even be in danger of stopping all together. At least delaying workouts for a while. That will slow your progress, and frustrate you at the same time.
The remedy? More "active rest". You don’t have to be in the gym, or on a sporting team, just do something you like that will help you burn more calories. An evening walk after dinner, a game of frisbee, walking the dog, tossing a ball around with the kids, bike riding, swimming around for the afternoon, ( or morning) , kicking the ball in the yard, or a nice modern game of Wii !!! Whatever gets you moving around, and your heart rate up for ½ an hour or so, can make all the difference in the world. So don’t quit the gym, and stop your fitness program, just try to spice it up, or add a bit of outside fun! Keep it fresh, and stay on track.
Be happy and healthy!!

Heads Up!

That's right! Just like your mom used to say, sit up straight! Keeping good posture, and your spine well aligned is essential to good health in many ways. Pinched nerves anywhere in the body are extremely painful, and debilitating. Bad posture really seems to be an epidemic in itself.
There are exercises that can be done to help improve or protect your posture. One simple thing to do is sit up straight, do not arch your back, and pinch your shoulder blades towards your spine. Hold that position for the count of 5, and release. Repeat 10 to 15 times, initiating the upper trapezius and rhomboids, which will train you to have better posture.
You should do this a few times a day, especially when you are sitting in front of the computer for a long time, or you notice yourself slouching at any point. Musicians may find this especially helpful, as they have to sit for very long periods for practice. When anyone is sitting for long periods for any reason, they should get up and walk around every hour to prevent blood clots from forming in the legs, and traveling into the heart causing heart attack or stroke. I mention that because it seems to be a big problem with people who sit for long periods of time, including frequent travelers.
So keep your head high, your shoulders back, and show the world your good posture! You'll save yourself spinal problems, and it will actually help your self image. And that is always a great thing!
Be happy and healthy!

De-Stress With Something New

I know many of you know that stress can be alleviated by exercise, but did you know it can also counteract your goals if it is out of hand. If you are going to the gym, and seem to have lost your momentum, regardless of good eating habits, and changing up your routine, check your stress !
Is there something bothering you? Something at the back of your mind causing you to lose a bit of sleep, or just keep you in a funk? Then you may be releasing "cortisol", a hormone responsible for retaining fat around the abdominal wall, and the organs that are housed there. It is something the body instinctively does to protect the organs in a time of food scarcity-which was considered a stressful time. You don’t know when you will eat again...the body stores fat.
Just because a person is thin doesn’t mean they aren’t carrying too much body fat-especially around the organs. Not where we want it to be!
Cutting stress is as important as working out and eating right. If you find yourself stressed, or something just hanging heavy on your mind, take a break. Do something you love to do! Take a walk on the beach, paint a picture, or take a drive to a favorite spot. Hit a museum for a change, or see a movie. A positive environment , and a good break from the norm can alleviate stress , and give one a refreshed outlook on life and goals.
If you don’t have a particular activity you do to relax, like a hobby, then go try something new! Start a hobby, or take a class for fun. Be it at the local College, High School, or Art Center in town. Hit the symphony! New information for the brain, and trying new activities activates the brain to create new cells! It fights aging of the brain, and compliments already present cognitive function! Yay, new activities!! Give it a shot! Next time you are scheduling your week, fit in something new! You’ll be glad you did.

Music For The Body and Soul

Music is an amazing language. It speaks to everyone regardless of their native tongue. It evokes emotion on every level, and soothes the injured soul. It is one of the most important means of communication known to the human race.
When you are working out, you get your heart rate up by listening to music with a good beat, to help get you motivated. You can then listen to music to get your heart rate down while cooling down from your workout. There are also health benefits in listening to calming music, or classical for relaxation, or before sleep. Even more than a nap, or meditation, Mozart's music is said to stimulate the part of the brain to enhance learning, as well as the ability to recall information during testing.
Music is a very uselful tool in getting one motivated for tasks, changing mood, or relaxation. The wellness field has long used music, and continues to use music more for therapeutic means. It can change your mind from distressful thoughts, and help improve mood to a positive state.
Cutting stress levels using positive and uplifting music is greatly recommended. It has positive effects on the body on a cellular level, and encourages a healthy immune system. Mind, Body and Spirit is all connected, and if one is out of balance, the rest suffer. Use the tools you have to heal yourself. If you need a little motivation, find some music to get you started, and go from there. For the relaxation aspect, I really recommend some Mozart. Even if you don't normally listen to classical music, you can aquire quite the appreciation for it, given the chance. After all, before any modern version of music that may be your usual preference, Mozart, Beethoven and the rest of the classical crew were dedicating their lives to art, and fighting polical and social battles doing so. Yes, even with that mellow stuff. Do a little read up on it, it is fascinating history, and the music itself...pure genius.
Be happy and healthy!

Learning By Example

We all tell our kids, to eat healthy, be active, and drink water instead of soda. We send our kids to school where they may (or may not) learn about the food pyramid, and what they should be eating. Do you follow a healthy fruit and vegetable variety at home that could compare? Or are your meals "normal...ya know, mac and cheese and chicken tenders, and spaghetti, etc." like many ?
I know a lady who we will call, "Bridgette" (not her real name), who is a personal trainer and had reformed her life from being obese with unhealthy lifestyle habits. She has kids, is divorced, and joint custody goes with that situation. She is concerned about the health and well being of her kids due to their poor diet and lack of exercise while they are at their dad's.
She has tried to impress upon them the importance of staying active, and eating healthy, (even "super healthy" sometimes) to counteract the damage that is being done with "normal" processed foods, high in saturated fat and other unhealthy ingredients. They have too much on their minds to do anything; it's too hot; they had a long week; they are online, and any other reason to say no. They are... t-e-e-n-a-g-e-r-s!!! That's right! And when you tell them something, you know they already know!
I remember when I knew everything! I wonder what happened?? I had to learn all this other stuff, and I am still learning! I must have been mugged for my previous wealth of knowledge sometime after puberty. I hope they find the one who took my vast knowledge of the universe, and throw the book at him...or her! Until then, many teens have access to this portal of knowledge, and sometimes find us ancient ones redundant and babbling nonsense of healthy living, and such . I joke, naturally . This view is shared by Bridgette, and so is the frustration that we try to educate those that would benefit from our past experience and knowledge in health and wellness through nutrition and exercise. Not just teens, but all people, age is no matter.
The problem is that regardless of how healthy Bridgette's home cooking was, and how much she influenced the healthier choices when going out, her kids did spend enough time at their dad's to pick up the easier, unhealthy habits. It doesn't matter that he is a cancer survivor ...who still smokes. Or that his mom has Diabetes, and likes to snack daily on meals of white bread only, and a side of coffee. His kitchen has been filled with starches, and processed meats and white pasta galore. Pizza service is on speed dial, and slider-like burgers and Mickey D's is the meal of choice otherwise. She has been worried for years, as all her advice is blown off by the person who is supposed to be helping raise her kids in an environment to help them flourish. Her ex-husband had appearently told her that veggies and fruits are luxery foods, and too much compared to the easier, cheaper mac and cheese. When she brought healthy food to his house, or sent healthy food home with the kids, affordable shopping lists, and articles on diet and exercise to the ex via e-mail, she thought he would somehow pay attention, and cop a clue. Hard luck, Bridgette.
It seems her teenage daughter, a brilliant student, with an amazing future, has been waking up feeling ill for a few months now. She has then started to feel ill after each meal, and exhausted. Her nails are ridged, and she has no energy and massive mood swings. Signs that she is not absorbing nutrients...otherwise known as malnutrition. I thought Bridgette was going to have a full blown breakdown. After all her " Please eat healthy..." and sent info over the years, trying to encourage a healthy lifestyle for the sake of her kids, this is happening. It is a nightmare for those who really know just how important nutrition and exercise are to true health. The pain some have gone through trying to restore health to even near normal, after being unhealthy and taking things for granted. It's not a game, and it is no fun. The potential for further disease and even death are very real issues. To top it off , Bridgette is a Personal Trainer with high nutition background. I felt so bad for her. She wept as she explained how she tried to encourage a healthy lifestyle away from her home.
You can only be responsible for your own house, and do your best to impress good eating and exercise habits on your kids wherever they go. There will always be outside influences, be it friends, other family members, or pressed schedules making fast food an easy option, regardless of the nutritional absence in the meals.
Her daughter became suddenly scared, and knew that this was no longer an abstract worry, of "what could happen". This is really happening, and to her, not someone else. She was tired and hoping that it's not the diabetes that runs in the family(and is engulfing the world-especially young people at an alarming epidemic rate) , but a digestive disorder maybe. You know , something fixable. Not a comfort to the mommy.
As Bridgette awaits the results of her daughter's tests in the next 7 days, we can take this as a huge example to be an example to our kids, and do our best to impress upon them the dire need of a nutritious diet, and proper exercise. You can't depend on others to teach or show your child what to do, if you do not adhere to it yourself. Appearently, Bridgette's ex husband thought that since the kids ate pretty healthy at their mom's house, that he was off the hook for a healthy lifestyle. He could just feed them garbage, and be sedentary and play his video games. Nice example.
Please , be proactive in your lifestyle, and set a good example for your loved ones. He is sorry NOW that he didn't listen. Now that his child is sick. The cancer he carried, and the tumor in the neck of his second child weren't enough to impress a healthier lifestyle in his house. Now his first born is sick. Let's hope he cops a clue soon! Or the cute 2 year old he and his new wife have will be following suit and suffering a disease of her own. It is sad , and I hope and pray all is safe and well with Bridgette's daughter. I hope it is something you can fix with a small effort. But I also hope the warning is respected , and the nutrition and exercise is implemented to make the kids as healthy, and as happy as they could be.
Lead by example, and don't just hope your kids are getting nutrients along the way "somewhere". Now and then nutrition isn't enough. Make it habit, and your kids will, too.
Be happy and healthy!

Nutrition, Exercise, and Disease Prevention and Treatment

Some major diseases can really be prevented with a regular exercise program, and good nutrition. "Major" being Diabetes, Heart Disease , and some Cancers. The problem is most people aren't willing to take on a healthy lifestyle. It is really sad to me. We wait until something goes wrong to recognize our mortality. That first report from the doctor, a trip to the ER, or a family member maybe. And only then do some actually make the change. That's right, only some.
I hope and pray that some day, when I get a client with Diabetes, High Cholesterol, or High Blood Pressure, or even Cancer, they will be more than willing to make the necessary changes to their diet and lifestyle in general. What I pray for even more, is that people, in general, will take control of their lives, and how they eat and exercise . I want the world to exercise everyday to the best of their ability, and to change their diet for health and overall wellness. Hipocrates said, "Let your food be medicine, and medicine be your food." He knew the importance of nutrition and the effects on the body. If you eat well, your body will serve you. If you have a poor diet, you will become tired, weak, and just unhealthy, until disease sets in. And it won't be quick...but very subtle. And once it is there, it wants to stay. And then you hope to have the energy and will power to make the changes to do something about it. Good nutrition and exercise are so important to the human being, I just can't stress it enough.
Don't know how to start? Just start...with an apple, or a salad. Fit it into your meals for the day. And don't let the old habits rule you. YOU make the habit-don't let the habit make you. So , make it healthy habits. Fit in more healthy foods, and practices. Alter that huge reward meal at the end of the day for a grilled chicken salad with fresh fruits and veggies and little or no dressing. Sometimes that can be the killer of a healthy meal. Caesar salad is good, the DRESSING IS BAD! Full of high cholesterol and saturated fat. Dark leaves are good -iceberg lettuce is very low in nutrients. Throw in chopped apple, or mandarins, or pear, with diced carrots, tomato, hard boiled egg-whatever you like! Be creative! Drink water instead of sodas, and limit that coffee or iced tea consumption. Too much caffeine constricts blood vessels, and can alter mood and concentration levels. Water hydrates the body, improving cellular function on every level. Other drinks dehydrate. Opt fo rthe H2O !!
As for exercise, take the stairs. Walk for 20 minutes a day. Swim when you can, play a game, start a softball team, throw a frisbee, hoola hoop with your kids, hida and go seek....Wii !! Do something to get moving. And if you are already achey....then you should really get moving! Exercise is used to help heal the body as well as prevent diseases. It can save your life before something goes wrong- or help you recover from your first warning. I wouln't wait for the warning-some don't get that chance...and the worst is a possibility from poor habits of a bad diet and lack of exercise. So step up! Grab your life back, and show your loved ones to do the same! Eat healthy, workout well, and take it one step at a time! Rome wasn't built in a day! Niether was any other city, for that matter! Build your healthy lifestyle, and live well in it!

Quality Nutritional Supplements

Nutritional products and the source. Yes, you know people always looking for a good quality vitamin, or herbal product. You enter a gym, health food store, or spa, and believe that they wouldn’t possibly sell items that are unhealthy, right? Think again. NEVER be afraid to question the ingredients in your health supplements! Take a look at some of the leading protein shakes, and energy drinks, and notice the contents including artificial sweeteners, or "little" to "no caffeine", yet contain one or more herbs that are natural sources of substantial amounts of caffeine!
I had the opportunity to take part in sales of supplements and products at a gym I worked in, but felt odd about it. At surface, it seemed like a good line of products, but when I reviewed the contents of some protein drinks, energy drinks, and the vitamins, I learned that artificial sweeteners were a source in some, and not enough dosage was available in the vitamins.
Active people need more than the 100% RDA, and even a great diet isn’t enough when limiting yourself to such a minimal vitamin/mineral supplement. You need to take control of your nutrition, and find what you need.
I think it’s fair to say that artificial sweeteners are just trouble waiting to happen, considering all the scientific data that has come back on their adverse effects on the body. Do we really need to beat a dead horse?
Aspartame
An artificial sweetener. Known by the trade name NutraSweet, it is an artificial sweetener. Certain people should avoid products that contain Aspartame. They are people who cannot metabolize the amino acid Phenylalanine, which is an ingredient in aspartame; and people who are suspectable to headaches. It is nearly 200 times sweeter than sugar. Aspartame is produced from the amino acids L-asartic acid and L=phenylalannine. It has been approved for use in certain goods since 1981. Heat causes aspartame to lose its sweetness, therefore, you can't bake with it. Unlike some sweetners, it has no aftertaste. An analysis of peer reviewed medical literature using MEDLINE and other databases was conducted by Ralph G. Walton, MD, Chairman, The Center for Behavioral Medicine, Professor of Clinical Psychiatry, Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine. Dr. Walton analyzed 164 studies which were felt to have relevance to human safety questions. Of those studies, 74 studies had aspartame industry-related sponsorship and 90 were funded without any industry money.

Your best bet, use Stevia if you can’t have sugar. It is completely safe, all natural, and doesn’t effect the blood sugar! YAY! Don’t talk yourself into using a product with artificial sweetener because it’s this "one" product. Really? Do you read ALL the products you consume? Even in restaurants? I didn’t think so. But, if you do...good job! You are a nutrition animal! I had a client who didn’t like the way Stevia tasted, but was diabetic. I explained that it was the safest, most natural alternative to real sugar. She opted for the artificial sweeteners. Can you possibly imagine how much of that stuff she consumes? In drinks, food, and just adding it straight? If you’re already sick, shouldn’t you try harder to take better care of yourself? Or is it just me?
I also talked to her about vitamins, and her daily activity, and workout schedule. She was a nurse, and that is a busy job! She was physical most of the day, and coming to workout, so needed a good vitamin with good bio-availability . She opted for a vitamin of much lesser quality, sighting cost and the fact that it said"100% RDA" after each vitamin. She got the source from a personal trainer, who was trying to make a sale.
There are personal trainers that offer great nutritional education, but not all are "nutritionally savvy". They can tell you a basis for weight loss in a protein/carb/fat ratio, with observance of caloric intake versus expenditure, but may not know about vitamins, minerals and who needs what or why. Ask...and don’t assume. Even your doctors, ask them how educated in nutrition they truly are. I have trained doctors and nurses, and they are just as frustrated about it as the average gym goer.
The truth is, most of the food is polluted, irradiated, or genetically modified in some way -seriously. Organic foods don’t even have enough of the needed nutrients due to lack of minerals in the soil. That, by the way, has been an issue since the turn of the 20th century...nearly a century ago! Concerned? You should be. Supplements are necessary for helping the body get what even the freshest food here can’t give it...nutrients. So when faced with finding what you need for supplements, and what has the best quality ingredients, don’t be afraid to ask questions.
Be happy and healthy!

Diabetes Danger

Diabetes. You hear of it often and may know someone with it. A friend, a family member, a co-worker, but don't think much of it until it's mentioned. I mention it often. I am a Team Captain for the American Diabetes Association, and we will do a walk next month. I see people in the gym who are here because they were recently diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. They are suddenly sick, and that is scary to them. No one thinks about the serious nature of the disease until it runs right into them personally. Especially young people. Teens, pre-teens, and young people all around are coming down with preventable diseases much younger than ever before! WHY?!
Lack of a healthy diet, and daily exercise has caused the very real epidemic of diabetes to hit nearly every household in America, and is engulfing Europe next. It is already becoming a massive problem in my native country of Ireland. Modern conveniences and processed foods have made the traditional fresh food, and walking for transportation (weather permitting) scarce, and "too much of a bother".
Well guys, it's time to bother you!! You have a choice-exercise for an hour a day, and eat badly once in a while, or be sick all the time, eating badly all the time! "Control" your disease, take meds you won't be able to afford, which will make everything else less affordable than it is now. Or, make the necessary dietary and activity changes and live a longer, healthier life. Be the example to your family and friends. Just take care of yourself! There are lots of reasons to do the right thing! Or do you like needles? Amputation? The great possibility of going blind, or having a heart attack or stroke because you couldn't be bothered?? Be bothered!
Take control of your eating, drinking and exercise regularly-as in once a day! Not once in a while!! This is a serious and nasty disease. You can either give in to it, or prevent it. You actually have a choice!! Put every urge to eat garbage, and be a couch potato aside, and just do what you need to do to preserve and empower yourselves.
Here are a few tips, provided you have no food allergies to the items listed below.
Seaweed or Kelp (even available in capsule form at your local health food store) can be used to lower cholesterol, high blood pressure, and regulate blood sugar. It keeps the endocrine system running pretty well. If you already have Thyroid issues, or algae/mold allergies, please discuss using the seaweed or kelp with your health care physician, as it can speed up the thyroid or cause adverse reactions with those allergic to only certain molds like penicillium. I am allergic to some molds, but I can have seaweed and spirulina , for example.
Oatmeal is another great friend in the low glycemic arena that helps control blood sugar, along with cinnamon .
Whole grains in general, as well as other high fiber foods can help lower blood sugar, and keep cholesterol down as well.
Daily exercise keeping the heart rate up, for at least 20-30 minutes a day will help the body work efficiently, as well. Resistance training three days a week, with cardio exercise every day, or at least 5 or 6 days a week, will help the body burn fat, and build muscle while preserving bone density as we age. That is important at any age. If you have physical limitations get clearance from your doctor, and hire a certified personal trainer. They will be able to help you workout as much as you possibly can taking into account your present limitation. Get active, and get healthy. Eat the right things, and take control of your health before you can't, and you're paying someone to "manage" your disease. And if you feel safe because you have insurance...that is disappearing left and right, I hope you have a back up plan. Get healthy, preserve and empower your life, and that of the people you care about. You'll be glad you did.

Workout Fuel

If you have ever wondered why you run out of energy while working out , I just want you to think about what you ate before hitting the gym. As a personal trainer, I find a lot of people think they can show up in the gym and workout on either an empty stomach, or on the wrong kind of foods. As long as you have no health issues or allergies to these foods, this is what I use, and would suggest.
The body uses glycogen for fuel, which is best taken from COMPLEX CARBS before a workout-45 minutes to an hour before, but no more. You have to have the glycogen available for the body, or you will have no energy to workout. Have a bit of oatmeal, a cliff bar, a granola bar with good ingredients-not a lot os simple sugars, or whole grain cereal. It is important to fuel the body, and not eat too little, or your body will turn to amino acids for fuel, and guess where that is...YOUR MUSCLES!! If you work out, and don't have enough fuel, your body will attack the muscle! That's what you don't want! Spare the muscle, build the muscle, but don't burn the muscle! Immediately after the workout, eat lean protein, and at least 15 to 25 grams. Turkey, fish, chicken, eggs, cottage cheese, or a pretein shake of good protein is essential . Add a small piece of fruit in that mix, and you will have great results. The fruit restores the simple sugars, and the enzymes thus help the protein absorb into the body better! So fuel up, BEFORE AND AFTER- and don't wait too long! The body needs the fuel, and use the good stuff-no junk food!

Eat The Green Stuff!

Oh My Gosh! After all the battles with your mom over eating your veggies has finally come down to this...you've gotta do it. Yes, they are most definetly very important for health, being loaded with essential vitamins and minerals.
Pregnant women especially need to eat greens for the folic acid! And I mean REALLY NEED TO FOLLOW THROUGH! No offense ladies, but if you are pregnant, and just don't "feel like" eating the greens, find a way to like them! The folic acid isn't just essential for you, it is essential for the brain development of your baby. I'm not talking about high test scores in grade school, I mean the actual formation of the brain. Spina Bifida is a serious problem affecting many women now, due to poor dietary habits, and lack of proper supplementation. Sadly this can be prevented, but not enough people know. Pass this on if you can.
I didn't like green vegetables when I was younger-even into my 20's, and would only eat broccoli now and then. When I was having my second child, in my fifth month of pregnancy, the doctor announced that he would schedule my abortion for the following Thursday. This was after myalpha-fetoprotein screening (AFP), and he was telling me that the baby was there ,but had no brain to speak of. He said the base of the spine hadn't "sealed" and that spinakl fluid in the amniotic fluid showed a massive birth defect. He was quite cold, and I didn't truly believe him. He was upset, and argued that I could go ahead but the baby wouldn't live, and I should just do as he says. I searched for understanding and rational thought at that moment, and prayed for help and the ability to cope at the same time. I refused and demanded a second test. He didn't want to do it, but when I was getting upset (and very loud around all the other expectant moms) , his partner calmed me and helped me make an appointment for an ultrasound test for fetal nuchal translucency- (checking out the baby's spine and skull.) It was really clear !! And I could see everything ! I didn't even have to go through the torture of drinking a barrell of water and "holding" for the test. The doctor kind enough to perform the test, (yes! DOCTOR!! YAY!!) was wonderful and thorough. She also became angry when I told her what happened. She announced that there was nothing wrong with my baby, and showed me where there was a tiny opening at the base of the spine before, but it had healed.
It was a blessing because he had no problems, but it was a lesson because appearently there had been something once. I knew I didn't eat as well as I should-avoiding veggies most of the time. That was a long time ago, and I enjoy them every day, along with my children. That baby is 14 years old now, 6 ft. , and in honors classes in high school. For the rest of us, it can help with the nervous system, and with stress in today's day and age-we need the nutrients! It's also the best way to get calcium and vitamin K!
Because of the scare with my son, and wanting to care for my kids the best way I could, I became a free-lance student of nutrition. I highly recommend you do the same. The library on this site is full of information, and you should access it for your health and that of your family. Greens are really good when you find your best way to prepare them. Here's a very green way to get vitamins and minerals in a quick glass! It seems extreme, but it tastes amazing!
GREEN SMOOTHIE!
1 Blender!
1 cup frozen fruit of any kind you like! (add ice if using
fresh fruit!)
I suggest berries in the mix!
2 or 3 handfuls of spinach, or kale, or collard greens
water to mix it up well-add slowly for consistency.
You can add protein powder if you like! :)
Put it all in a blender and blend for 1 to 2 minutes! It's sweet from the fruit, and you don't taste the bitterness of the greens!
* Try to alternate greens to keep your system alkaline, ( not to throw off your pH balance!!) Enjoy-and share with the family!

The Importance of Positive Visualization

Many people will scoff at the use of visualization as a technique to accomplish anything. It has been proven many times that the best athletes use it as a means of training along with the physical training, to prepare themselves for their upcoming event, and victory. Those athletes that take the time to write down their goals, and concentrate on the images of them successfully doing the task at hand, and succeeding, are the ones that usually do ! It has been that way through time, and is a huge practice in faith, and belief systems. All positive reinforcement classes, training seminars, and religious texts alike encourage people to be thankful for what they have, use their given resources for good, and focus on accomplishing their goals as if nothing can inhibit them. No negative talk, no bad images, no negative company being kept, and no bad habits taking over the lifestyle. Visualize yourself doing what it is you want to accomplish. Just close your eyes and see, it. How do you feel in your image? Pretty darn good, huh? Keep that thought-get pumped up with it. Focus on being strong enough and knowledgeable enough to ethically and honestly accomplish that goal. You see yourself obtaining the knowledge and resources you need to accomplish that goal. You see the positive results of accomplishing your goal, and feel compelled to go after it.
Your brain recognizes images, and doesn't waste time saying, that is true, and that is not. If you show the brain the positive things you wish to accomplish, and believe it, it will do it's best to help you get that.Even on a subconscious level. The brain knows pleasure and pain, and will try for what you show it the most. Focus on that dream! Negative images get in the way of positive goals, so avoid them. Focus on positive images-re-do your home, bedroom, office, with positive quotes, photos, and colors you like. Turn off the computer or TV an hour before bed, and read on the subject you want to know more about to help you get there. Keep company with those who share your enthusiasm, and avoid even family and friends that have nothing but negative comments to add to your day. No words like, " Be relaistic and forget it, that's a long shot, it'll never happen, why don't you just..." or any other counter productive comments. Just hang out for a short time, keeping in touch , keep conversation light, and then go do your thing. Hang out with people going after their goals, be it in school, work, a club, the library, a book store, a museum, the symphony, or any other place where highly accomplished, and the future accomplished hang out. You will be pleasantly surprised, and may make great friends along the way.
See yourself healthy and happy.Take on a healthy lifestyle as well. The most successful people are usually the healthiest, and most positive. Workout, and eat healthy. Take your vitamins and make sure you keep yourself well rested, and do the things that keep your mood up-healthy things. A good hobby, an activity, whatever. And take a few minutes a day to stop, smile, and see yourself accomplishing what it is you really want to do. It works like you won't believe!
I start my day with a thankful hello to God, and smile at the future I am headed for. Don't give in to negative talk, and if bad ethics and negativity are the norm in your office or job, just know that you will do things the right way in your future. Discuss little with co-workers, and spend your time studying what you want to know for your goals. Keep in touch with your friends who share your attitude, just to say hi, and remind yourself you are in good company.
Believe it, and it will be. Listen to positive music as much as possible. It can uplift you, and bring about positive images and feelings . Classical music is listened to by successful people for a reason...it is actually healing to the body and mind, and enduces a relaxed positive state -depending on the piece. I love Mozart ! Always a pleasure. The effects on the body on a "cellular level" is much stronger when you listen to an orchestra in person, as opposed to a cd. The body can tell the difference. Grab a couple of the cheap seats, and hit the symphony for one night a month-you may just surprise yourself! I know quite a few classical musicians-awesome people! Brilliant, and what great humor!
So when you have something to accomplish, a goal, a dream, a task at hand...see it as yours." Be the change you want to see in the world.." as Gandhi said. Have faith, and make it so. You just might truly enjoy the journey!

Pure Energy

In today's day and age many people are trying to harness different forms of energy. Be it solar, hydro, algae or wind, there always seems to be a "better" source of natural fuel to consider. What about our bodies? Did you realize that we too can benefit from all these sources of natural energy?? Our bodies, that is-not just as an "outside source" to fuel our planes, trains, and automobiles!
We are all looking for something to give us a boost in the day, or to make it through the workout, or not crash early in the evening after a long day. With the right kind of lifestyle-proper nutrition, exercise, hydration and rest, energy can be harnessed and used. We can definitely use the sun's energy for our bodies in producing Vitamin D, which is a serious matter today! Studies show that lack of Vitamin D can increase risk of reproductive system cancers, as well as deplete energy levels. The latter I experienced personally. It is important to get 5 to 10 minutes of sunlight a day, to help the body regenerate it's Vitamin D supply through the skin. It is also necessary for the absorpition and utilization of calcium and magnesium, which is imortant for muscle contraction, and bone health.
As for the "hydro"...I think we all know we should be drinking more water, right? Some of us do, but there are those times we all fall off the "water wagon", so to speak. Coffee, tea, and juice are not water. Dehydration will cause a multitude of symptoms from headache and fatigue, to nausea and muscle cramps. Even disguise itself as hunger! Uh-oh! Just sip water throughout the day, and you should keep hydrated well enough. Your goal...consume about half your body weight in ounces of water to keep the body happy. And don't GULP or drink a huge glass all at once!! You can actually fool the body into thinking that you just had a meal, and the blood will direct itself to the digestive tract, leaving the other organs and cells less hydrated than they were before! You can counteract what you were trying to acheive in the first place. All things in moderation.
Except for air! We need that on a much more constant basis, agreed? Yes , though we all breathe, sometimes we tend to take "shallow" breaths, or hold our breath during activity or stress throughout the day. Remember to breathe!! I keep a picture of a dolphin in different parts of my apartment to remind me to breathe better. I once read that some of the North West Native American tribes consider the Dolphin Totem as a reminder to take in the breath of life in a very spirtual way, and that it helps keep a good, even pace in the day and in life. I liked that philosophy, and thought it important to remind us that we need to breathe during our activities in a more efficient way. The muscles need oxygen carried by the blood, and if you hold your breath, especially during exercise or heavy physical activity, you deplete the body of valuable oxygen rich blood, and can feel a bit drained, and lightheaded. So take a deep breath , and exhale...feel better?
Now that we've covered sun, water and wind energy, (aren't we all modern and green!) let's talk about the real "green energy"! No , not for your car...and not green M&M's. This is what the body absolutely LOVES!! Oh, yeah! A-L-G-A-E !! Spirulina!! Woo Hoo! You heard me! Now we are getting deep! Well, not that deep. It grows ON the water, is an AMAZING source of protein, and SUPER RICH in "Phytonutrients", and makes anything you put it in turn ....GREEN!!! Green orange juice! Green smoothies! Green Milk! I don't recommend that last one...not a great idea...Blah! But, to each his own. Saying that, I find that it is a great boost of energy, and the body loves you for thinking on such an incredible level as to consider it's benefits. What are they?? I never thought you'd ask! To name a mere few...it can strengthen the bodies immune system helping it fight off disease, and inhibit tumor growth and viruses. I suffer from seasonal allergies, as does my son, and I have found that keeping spirulina on hand on a daily basis has made a difference. It tastes better in orange juice, I find. Or blended into a protein shake is a good way to get a dose. Phytonutrients are found in plant food sources, fruits and green vegetables, but that spirulina really kicks it up a knotch! So go ahead..."Go Green"....all the way
!!

Music To The Soul....

"Art is Life!"

The arts are truly important to our lives in many ways. They are a means of relaxation, expression, and cultural treasure. Be it visual arts, writing, theater, dance or music, we need to preserve the arts for our own good.
Many people dismiss rather than encourage developments and support of the arts, concentrating on science and math, or sports. I am here to tell you that music itself is one of the greatest possible tools for development of the academic mind, and the athlete.
Mozart's music has been been proven to improve test scores of university students, if listened to for 20 minutes before exams. More so than a 20 minute nap, or quiet meditation ! While studying, it is said to enhance learning ability and retention.
Different forms of music can get you motivated for your workout, your work day, a fun time out with friends and family, or the big game! It is used in operating rooms to help relax both doctor and patient, while keeping blood pressure levels down for the benefit of both. It encourages healing in the body on a cellular level. It soothes us when we need to relax, and enhances our lives with it's unspoken language.
Music can evoke the greatest of emotions, and add a great effect to any movie. Think of your favorite soundtracks, or even a favorite movie, and go over that music and how it makes you feel.
Music Therapy is a growing form of highly effective means to treat people in many cases of trauma and illness. When used in conjunction with other forms of therapy, such as visual arts, diet and exercise, it's healing effects are multiplied intensely.
The arts help us deal with everything, and encourage parts of the brain, and even the cells in the body into appropriate action. Scientists have even discovered that amino acids in our DNA even have their own individual sound! Musical notes for our Genetic Codes! How amazing! Music is in us all, and must remain an integral part of the lives of each and every one of us. Preserve the arts, preseve and empower the artists, for without them , what would we be?

Support The Arts!

"Mommy Time"

Finding time to work out when you have little people is a task in itself. Along with all the other things you try to make time for, exercise seems to (unfortunately) fall under the list of "will do later" . Later is a long time away, and sometimes doesn't show up. Before you know it, your child is 5, and you are still justifying the extra weight as "baby fat". Sadly, I see it often. Mom's rushing in to find time at the gym, and hoping to come in at least twice a week. Not to mention trying to find a gym with child care, and hoping your child doesn't have "issues" with the care giver, or another child. And we won't even talk about the transfer of germs. It's bad enough we adults pick up Mrs. Whoever's virus after her workout, so why throw extra factors into play.
We have to workout, for our health, and as good example to our kids for their future lifestyle. Working out at home can be the best alternative, and you can do it with your kids safely in their own environment. You can use your own body weight to improve your strength, and enhance the workouts and add on tools over time. Resistance chords are awesome tools-inexpensive and versatile.
With the online training, you still get a certified personal trainer guiding you, for much less than at the gym, and no membership fees. No contracts, no hours of operation, no travel time or gas used, and you do it while dinner is on, or the laundry is washing and drying.
Again, it is a great example for the kids. I worked out at home when my kids were babies, and continued into their now teen years. They see that example, and use it for a model of healthy living for themselves. For that, I am happy.
Be happy and healthy...and pass it on to your kids!
